Welcome to the Samoëns Valley...

... and the legend of SKADI!

Skadi was a giant called the "Snow Goddess" and was the personification of winter.
His father, Thiazi (Thiassi or Thjazi), was killed by Loki after stealing the Apples of Idun and the Gods expecting a destructive revenge from Skadi preferred to appease him by offering him to unite with one of them, after she refused gold. She also demanded to make her laugh, which Loki managed to do by attaching the testicles to a goat!
Free to choose who she wanted, she could only designate the elected by looking at his feet and only them. Convinced that the finest were Balder's, she opted for them. Unfortunately for her it was those of God Njord.
The marriage ceremony was dreary and the two lovers quickly quarreled, Skadi preferring to live at the home of his father, Thrymheim, in the mountains of Jotunheim. Njord, when he wanted to join Noatun, his Oceanic home. They then decided by mutual agreement to live each other's home for nine days and vice versa. It had no results and they ended up parting, Skadi returning to Jotunheim to unite with Ull.
The Giant, however, remained on good terms with the Gods who appointed her to place the venomous snake above Loki's head when he received his punishment.

Other names: Skaoi or Skade. Much happier on the frozen peaks of Jotunheim, she was also the Goddess of mountaineers and hunters, successfully guiding their sled in snow-covered tracks.
